The fiscal year in which the income tax return is submitted, is called the assessment year. The fiscal year in which the income that is being assessed has been earned is called the income year. For example, if a person or an entity is going to submit their Income Tax Return in the 2024-25 fiscal year (July 01, 2024-June 30, 2025), then 2024-25 fiscal year is their assessment year. The income being assessed was earned in the immidiate previous year which, in this case, is the 2023-24 fiscal year (July 01, 2023-June 30, 2024). So, the income year would be 2023-24 and the assessment year would be 2024-25. / করবর্ষ হলো যে বছর আয়কর রিটার্ন জমা দেওয়া হয় এবং আয়বর্ষ হলো করবর্ষের পূর্ববর্তী বছর অর্থাৎ যে বছরের আয় এর উপর আয়কর হিসাব করা হয়। উদাহরণস্বরূপ ধরা যাক, কোনো ব্যাক্তি ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরে (১লা জুলাই ২০২৪-৩০ জুন ২০২৫) আয়কর রিটার্ন জমা দেবেন। এক্ষেত্রে তার করবর্ষ হবে ২০২৪-২৫ এবং যে অর্থবছরের আয় এর উপর এই কর এর হিসাব করা হবে তা হবে তার আয়বর্ষ যা এক্ষেত্রে ২০২৩-২৪।

Resident and non-resident tax payers pay taxes under different rates in Bangladesh. So, how do we classify the two? Well, a person is considered a resident tax payer if he/she either, stays in Bangladesh for more than 180 days in one income year or, stays 90 days or more in one income year and a total of 365 or more days in the previous 4 years. If a person meets either of these conditions and generates income within Bangladesh, he/she will pay taxes according to the tax slab set by the National Board of Revenue as a resident regardless of their citizenship status. A person who is working and generating income inside Bangladesh but does not meet these requirements is considered a non-resident tax payer and they’ll have to pay a flat 30% income tax on the income that they generate while staying in Bangladesh. / বাংলাদেশী কর আইনে, আবাসিক এবং অনাবাসী করদাতাদের জন্য পরষ্পর ভিন্ন কর হার এর বিধান রয়েছে। আয়কর আইন মোতাবেক, কোনো ব্যাক্তি যদি কোনো আয়বর্ষে ১৮০ দিন বা তার বেশী সময় বাংলাদেশে অবস্থান করে অথবা কোনো আয়বর্ষে ৯০ দিন বা তার বেশী এবং পূর্ববর্তী ৪ বছরে ৩৬৫ দিন বা তার বেশী সময় বাংলাদেশে অবস্থান করেন এবং অর্থ উপার্জনে সক্রিয় হন, তবে তার এই আয় আবাসিক করদাতা হিসেবে করযোগ্য হবে এবং তিনি এনবিআর প্রদত্ত আয়কর এর ধাপ অনুযায়ী আয়কর প্রদান করবেন। যে ব্যাক্তি উক্ত শর্ত পূরণ করেন না তিনি অনাবাসী করদাতা হিসেবে বিবেচিত হবেন এবং বাংলাদেশে উপার্জিত তাঁর সামষ্টিক আয় এর ওপর ৩০ শতাংশ হার এ আয়কর প্রদান করবেন।
